ISCC stands for International Sustainability and Carbon Certification. ISCC certification ensures credible, sustainable, traceable and deforestation-free biomass products, wastes and residues, non-biological renewable materials (RFNBOs – renewable fuels of non-biological origin) and recycled carbon-based materials. The ‘EU’ aspect applies to biomass and biofuels and the ISCC standards that meet and comply with the key article of EU renewable energy legislation – the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II).
The independent third-party certification, conducted under the accredited company DoubleHelix, ensures compliance with strict criteria concerning biodiversity and prevention of land conversion, social practices, greenhouse gas emissions savings and the traceability of materials through the supply chain to the generation of the biofuel or biomass.
Achieving ISCC EU certification demonstrates that a company has voluntarily implemented sustainability criteria to comply with the Renewable Energy Directive II. In doing so, the supply chain and agricultural products or residues, production residues, biogenic wastes used to create biofuel (e.g. bioLNG, bioLPG, biobutanol, biopropane, biomethane, rDME etc.) and the heat and power energy that is generated can confirm compliance with the RED II. Compliance with the RED II meets key articles of UK legislation too (Renewable Transport Obligation 2009, Renewable Heat Incentive 2018, Renewables Obligation Order 2015).
ISCC EU CERTIFICATION DEMONSTRATES
- Implementation of zero-deforestation
- Protection of land with high biodiversity value and high carbon stock
- Protection of soil, water and air
- Compliance with human, labour and land rights
- Measurement and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
- Traceability throughout supply chains
- Integration of smallholders in international supply chains
- Compliance with laws and international treaties
Gap Analysis
The independent third-party certification, working under our partnership with the accredited company DoubleHelix, ensures compliance with strict criteria concerning biodiversity and prevention of land conversion, social practices, greenhouse gas emissions savings and the traceability of materials through the supply chain to the generation of the biofuel or biomass.
Benefits of ISCC EU Certification
- Greater access to international markets that require biomass and biofuel traceability and assurances.
- Acceptance of your feedstock or fuel into EU markets that require RED II and Fuel Quality Directive compliance to be demonstrated.
- Essential tool for brands and companies to demonstrate increased Corporate Social Responsibility.
- Verification of your company’s ESG goals with respect to biofuels and biomass.
- Accessibility to financial incentives that require certification and evidence that your outputs are contributing towards meeting biofuel targets through compliance with sustainability criteria.
