EnviroSense have developed a carbon insetting registry whereby we can deliver a third-party verification for carbon saving ‘originators’ who have initiated a positive fuel switch within their supply, and have therefore delivered a direct emissions saving. The fuel switch involves a company shifting from a fossil fuel, or carbon intensive fuel, to a more sustainable fuel that releases less kilograms of carbon dioxide for each megajoule that is burnt. The fuel switch can vary between numerous different technologies and transport types, and already the EnviroSense registry includes counterparty’s who have shifted to renewable fuels for shipping, trucks and buses.

Methodology

The methodology for calculating the Scope 3 emission savings involves assessing the evidence for the biofuel/RFNBO delivery for fuelling, including the tonnes delivered, the complete supply chain carbon intensity, voluntary scheme proof of sustainability, bio-blend percentage and fuel delivery note. The carbon savings per tonne of fuel burnt (tCO2e/tFuel) can then be calculated relative to the RED II fossil fuel default carbon intensity values, and this factor can then be multiplied by the total tonnes of biofuel that were fuelled into the receiving vehicle.

The Carbon Insetting Registry is designed to track the movement of Scope 3 emissions savings, that are submitted by the Counterparty on a monthly basis (specific to the vessel that was fuelled with biofuel). Once the verification has taken place, and the Scope 3 emissions savings certificates are transferred into the possession of the downstream Counterparty, then the retirements of the Scope 3 emissions savings can be allocated to the downstream customers to ensure that any risk of double counting of the sustainability credentials of savings has been mitigated.
