EnviroSense provides Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme assessments for qualifying UK organisations.

Our ESOS service covers organisational qualification, energy consumption analysis, site audits, energy saving opportunities, evidence pack preparation, action plans and compliance reporting. Assessments are completed under the oversight of an approved ESOS Lead Assessor.

What is ESOS?

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for large UK undertakings and corporate groups.

An organisation generally qualifies for ESOS Phase 4 if, on 31 December 2026, it:

  • Employs 250 or more people
  • Has annual turnover exceeding £44 million and an annual balance sheet total exceeding £38 million
Corporate groups may qualify where at least one UK group undertaking meets the qualification criteria.
Qualifying organisations must assess their energy consumption every four years. For the current compliance period, the Phase 4 qualification date is 31 December 2026 and the compliance deadline is 5 December 2027.

Our ESOS assessment service
EnviroSense undertakes a structured assessment of energy use across the organisation’s buildings, industrial processes, transport and other relevant activities.
Our service can include:
  • Confirming whether the organisation or corporate group qualifies for ESOS
  • Establishing the organisational and reporting boundaries
  • Calculating total energy consumption
  • Identifying areas of significant energy consumption
  • Calculating energy intensity ratios
  • Reviewing existing ISO 50001 certification
  • Undertaking energy audits and required site visits
  • Identifying practical energy saving opportunities
  • Estimating potential energy, carbon and financial savings
  • Preparing the ESOS assessment report and evidence pack
  • Supporting the organisation’s notification of compliance through MESOS
The significant energy consumption included within the applicable compliance routes must account for at least 95% of the organisation’s total energy consumption.

Energy audits and site assessments
Where an energy audit is required, EnviroSense reviews verifiable consumption data covering a suitable 12-month period and assesses how energy is used across relevant assets and activities.
Site visits are used to confirm energy-consuming equipment, operational practices and opportunities for improved efficiency. Recommendations are tailored to the organisation and may cover buildings, heating, lighting, industrial processes, fleet operations, energy management and on-site generation.
Identified opportunities are assessed according to their expected energy savings, financial benefits and practical implementation requirements.

ESOS reporting and compliance
Following the assessment, EnviroSense prepares the supporting ESOS report and evidence pack.
These records set out:
  • The organisational and energy consumption boundaries
  • The routes used to achieve compliance
  • The energy audits and site visits completed
  • The energy saving opportunities identified
  • The calculation methodologies and supporting data
  • Progress against previous energy saving commitments
  • The required director and Lead Assessor approvals
We can also support the preparation of the organisation’s MESOS compliance notification. Final submission and board-level approval remain the responsibility of the participating organisation.

ESOS action plans and progress updates
EnviroSense can support organisations with ESOS action plans and annual progress updates, including reviewing implementation against previously identified energy saving measures. We can also assist with outstanding requirements from an earlier compliance period and ongoing preparation for future ESOS phases.

This provides a clear record of actions completed, energy savings achieved and explanations where planned measures have not been implemented.
