envirosense® is a UK Government registered Monitoring Organisation for UK Timber Regulations. They provide responsible sourcing services, using a methodical, structured approach which can be expanded to commodities other than timber.
The EU’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is set to replace the current European Union’s Timber Regulation (EUTR), while significantly enlarging its scope – both in terms of commodities and regulatory aim.
The commodities to be included in the new regulation are:
- Cattle (including leather)
- Cocoa
- Coffee
- Palm oil (including derivatives)
- Soya
- Rubber and
- Wooden products (including printed products which are outside of EUTR scope)
The new law will make it obligatory for companies to undertake due diligence to ensure that goods sold within the EU have not been produced on land deforested after December 2020 and have been legally produced. While SMEs have responsibility for this due diligence only if they are the first placer of goods on the EU market (referred to in the regulation as “operators”), companies which are not SMEs need to carry out due diligence even if they are buying or selling these goods already within the EU market (referred to in the regulation as “traders”).
envirosense® can work with your business’s voluntary, or mandatory adoption of the EU Deforestation Regulation by supporting:
- Information collection
Specific information must be collected – this includes product description (name and quantities), country of production, date of / range of production and, significantly, geo-located coordinates of where the goods were produced - Conducting Risk Assessments
Importers need to assess the risk of non-compliance with the regulation for their goods/product’s supply chain using valid documentary evidence of the supply chain, from reliable sources. This information must be backed up using satellite monitoring tools or isotope analysis of goods. - Developing Risk Mitigation Measures
This stage is aimed at reducing the risk of illegally products goods and products from deforested areas being sold in the EU. This may include requesting further information from the supplier or using third-party verification (e.g., field audits) to check the supply chain and the legality of the goods and products. - Training
Of buyers and product teams to inform them of the Regulation intention and the principles of due diligence to help manage risk to the business and brand.
