Envirosense - Sustainability Monitoring, Reporting & Verification & Due Diligence

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) presented a report to parliament[1] on the 25th June 2025 on the progress of reducing emissions nationally and reported that “the share of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as a proportion of all jet fuel used in UK aviation increased substantially, from 0.7% in 2023 to 2.1% in 2024.” Whilst this is positive news, they continued the report stating that “this must increase further to reach the 10% required by the UK SAF Mandate by 2030”. This report highlights the growing demand for SAF in the UK and the importance of this industry in the UK’s fight against Climate Change. The report also notes that it is important for the SAF industry to develop a range of different processes from a range of feedstocks.

Subsequently, on the 22nd of July the Aviation Minister, Mike Kane, announced that 17 companies will receive a share of £63 million in order to boost the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) industry in the UK[2] as part of the Advanced Fuels Fund (AFF). This is the third round of companies to be supported by the AFF, with the combined total value of the fund now standing at £198 million.

The Winners:
Funding has been awarded to both large commercial plants and smaller demonstration plants where more research will lead to better and more efficient fuels and commercial processes.

Across the winning companies a wide range of processes and feedstocks are used[3] as seen in the table below.

Previous windows:
Previous recipients from the first two rounds of the Advanced Fuel Fund are already making significant strides in the growth of the SAF industry. In fact, the total annual output of all the commercial plants from windows 1 and 2 of the AFF is expected to be 702.4 kt/year when all plants are operational and at full operational capacity, within the next 5 years.

What’s next:
Investment in this sector is crucial for the UK to reach its emissions and net zero targets. With aviation emissions now exceeding pre-pandemic levels, there has never been a more important time for investment. This announcement is a big step toward the UK SAF industry contributing the proposed 10% of all jet fuel used in the UK by 2030 required by the UK SAF Mandate.

Envirosense®: Bringing ISAE 3000 Assurance to Sustainable Aviation Fuel Producers
Envirosense® has extensive experience verifying renewable fuel sustainability under schemes such as ISCC EU, ISCC CORSIA, RTFO and the SAF Mandate. Under the SAF Mandate, obligated parties must demonstrate that the SAFs they produce meet mandatory carbon and sustainability criteria. All fuel quantities submitted by obligated parties to the Department for Transport must be independently verified to a ‘reasonable assurance’ level. Envirosense® can provide reasonable assurance and agree to a declaration that they have seen sufficient evidence to validate the fuel quantities entered on ROS.
